Why Lab Diamonds May be the New “Forever” in the Diamond Industry

Many jewelry stores have been showing an increase in lab diamonds as the stone of choice for women for their engagement or wedding rings. Not surprising, however, is the gravitation towards more ethical and environmentally-friendly, reasonably priced stones. Many may not know that lab diamonds are truly the “real deal.” If you aren’t familiar with lab diamonds, it might be worth your while to understand the basics so you can make the best possible decision.

Synthetic diamonds are also referred to as lab diamonds or laboratory grown diamonds. The process is faster than naturally grown diamonds, and involves high standard equipments and laboratory facilities in order to produce these gem stones. Although laboratory grown diamonds are basically the same in quality as natural and mined diamonds, they are far more cheaper, and to the untrained eye, they are undetectable whether it is lab grown or not. Unlike cubic zirconia, which is simulated and artificially grown, lab grown diamonds are actually real, authentic diamonds, only that these are made in laboratories instead of being mined or naturally produced by nature.

The only way to determine whether a diamond is natural or manmade is with the use of special equipment or instruments. Both are made with nearly pure carbon, and their crystalline structures are almost identical. While natural diamonds originate from 200 kilometers beneath the surface of the earth, lab diamonds are made in a laboratory with facilities that allow the use of two methods, namely High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Natural diamonds are slowly made from the intense heat and pressure from volcanic activities, and can take up to millions or even billions of years to create. Lab diamonds are made only within weeks or months, and are much cheaper than natural diamonds, sparing you from the guilt of having to buy “blood diamonds” which have been causing conflict in many nations.

Getting deeper into this process, lab diamonds are made with equipment which replicates nature’s fascinating way of producing diamonds. Once there is enough synthetic diamond crystals created, the new stone is cut, polished and finished to the same standard of quality demanded by the finest jewelers. Most lab diamonds are used for engagement, wedding or anniversary rings or matching earrings. Many of the companies specializing in man made diamonds offer a wide range of color, from canary yellows to reds to strikingly bold blues.

After scientists and chemists have developed scientific methods of producing lab diamonds, the demand for these gem stones have increased rapidly. And, because manmade diamonds are far cheaper, most consumers prefer these as engagement rings without worrying about their budgets.

Engagement Ring Etiquette How Much To Spend

Knowing how much to spend is a vital part of engagement ring etiquette. Given this is something that is a symbol of love and partnership it is important that you know what you are getting for your money.

However, this does not mean you should bankrupt yourself in the process. The reason engagement rings became popular as they were meant to signify that a groom could look after their prospective bride and that should the worst happen there was something valuable to help them get out of any problems.

It was said in 1477 that the Austrian Archduke Maximillian gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring for their engagement. He placed it on the third finger on the left hand as this was said by the Ancient Egyptians to be the vein that led straight to the heart. Whether this story is true or not, it is an illustration that is worth bearing in mind when making a selection.

For example, if you go for a gold band, you may be tempted to get the full 18 karat. However because this is a softer gold you are more likely to damage it over time, leading to a lot of either extra cleaning bills or having to take out a cleaning service with your jeweller. This is why it is a good idea to ask what kind of insurance or guarantee comes with your choice of ring.

It is also worth noting that in the last twenty years that yellow gold has fallen out of favour. The most popular choice in recent years has been white gold as it reflects the brilliance of the diamond better than yellow. However this too can also have problems, as white gold often has rhodium added to it to enhance the shine or fire of the diamond. This means that every couple of years it has to be recoated.

Platinum is the most expensive metal for a band. You should check that the band you buy is 95 per cent platinum as it will usually be alloyed with a material like rhodium, the quantity of which will affect the price.

When choosing a diamond, it is important to consider the cut. This does not just mean how large it is but also the shape. While round ones are the most common, you can also choose from emerald, pear, marquise, oval and heart. If you are choosing for a bride to be, check from their existing jewellery to see what style would appeal to them. It is also worth noting their ring size so that you can get one that fits!

When choosing any gift, people often say it is the thought that counts. The important thing to remember being that saying is that it does not mean you remembered to buy something or that it was expensive. It is about using the information available to you and buying something created with someone else in mind. In this instance, the amount of thought you put into this particular purchase is vital.

Check comparison and feedback websites online for the latest information and the best of luck to you.

Quick Excerpts Of Wedding And Proposal Stories Part 2

Daniel proposed on the 10th June one week before my birthday. He was extremely nervous during the evening and apparently rang up one of my friends terrified that I would say no. He took me to the Windy Point restaurant for dinner. After dinner we headed back to my mum’s house and received a phone call and Daniel insisted that we need to go out again.

A simple civil ceremony was held amongst the sand dunes at the Main Beach Lakes Entrance in near perfect weather with a backdrop of the front lake and the blue sea. The aisle was lined with eight white bali flags streaming in the light breeze and rose petals scattered on the sand. I was so excited walking down the aisle with my Dad by my side to the song ‘At Last’ by Etta James. As soon as I saw Stephen I couldn’t keep my eyes off him for the entire ceremony, everything else was a blur.

We just had a pretty relaxed ceremony. We had our celebrant (who was fantastic) and we got married at Weir Reserve at Penrith on the lake and it was so picturesque. Our ceremony was about 25 mins long and we had a rose ceremony at the end, mind you I have no idea where the roses went.

Romantically, we met on a cruise to the South Pacific in January 2005. We met right at the start of our trip and were inseparable for the next ten days. When we returned home to NSW, we kept in touch driving over an hour and half to each others house as we couldn’t bear to be apart. Eventually, we moved in together (August 2006) after buying our own home. Scott proposed two months later in front of the lighthouse/blowhole in Kiama at dusk and then took me out to a quaint little Mexican restaurant for dinner – I couldn’t have been happier.

After dinner we drove up to the lighthouse. It was pouring rain so Lee’s original plan wasn’t going to work, so he had to tell me then that he had booked us a room at the lighthouse. I was so excited as I’ve always wanted to stay there. When the rain finally stopped Lee suggested we go and have a look at the lighthouse at night time. It was very scary up there, old and historic and it felt as if there were ghosts lerking around. I was about to tell Lee that I wanted to go back as it was really spooky, but then he said ‘do you want your last birthday present?’. I didn’t know what he was talking about and then to my surprise he pulled out a box. I was so nervous I just started laughing, the poor guy didn’t know what to do. But once I calmed down he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. It was so exciting.

One of the more challenging things to organise was family – because they have a mind and will of their own! Everyone had different expectations and as they all live 80km from where we live, there were initial issues about us not having the wedding where they live, but we overcame this by gentle persuasion (and the fact that the international airport -where our overseas friends were landing- was 10km from where we had the reception!)
