There is no question that Formula One racing is a gripping motor sport for those interested in cars, speed, engineering and design. The design of these Formula One cars is crucial to the speed that the car will travel at, and it is also imperative for the safety of the driver.

Satellite radio has really taken off in some parts of the world, predominantly in countries with a huge land mass. Places like America, Canada, Europe and Australia, places where it is difficult to realize national coverage with traditional land-based radio broadcasting without hundreds of expensive sub-stations to amplify the signal.

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt, satellite radio is here to stay for several reasons. First of all, satellite radio is digital and therefore is able to produce sound of very high quality. Terrestrial digital radio can do that too, you could say.

Yes, that is correct, but the coverage of terrestrial digital radio is quite small which means tht if you are driving a long way, you will have to keep retuning your radio to a different station, whereas with satellite, the footprint can cover thousands of square miles.

It appears that everyone wants to get their hands on this new marvel of wide-area coverage at a cheaper price than it used to cost to cover a county. And why not? Playboy Satellite radio is one of those companies that has realized the potential of satellite radio and set up its own channel with a large footprint. It was launched in March 2006 on the Sirius network by Christie Hefner and now boasts over one million subscribers, which is a truly remarkable figure. There have almost certainly never before been a million opt-in subscribers to any radio network channel ever in times gone by before.

What makes this number of one million subscribers even more impressive is that the Playboy satellite radio channel is not part of a package or a bundle of other channels. No, people have to willingly phone up or go to the Playboy website and ask for membership personally, that is to say that it costs time and effort to sign up and one million people thought that it was worth it.

Something else that is curious is that the Playboy brand is associated with visual stuff – naked ladies, in fact – and radio is well-known for not being very good at visual representation. It is clear that no radio station is going to make much progress in the market place using nudity as a trump card.

So what is happening here? Well, the truth is that no-one is really completely sure. You have to subscribe, but it is free at the moment. It is also true that the Playboy brand name is considered cool and distinctive among a certain echelon of society, but will that be enough to keep people tuned in? Only time will tell.

The answer almost certainly lies in the fact that it is free and that it can be accessed over a large area, but they cannot be the only causes. There is probably a novelty value too and the quality of the programmes will have to be high as well.

RFID Tags: Passive, Active And Hybrid

All RFID tags are used to store and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. For instance: RFID tags can hold much more data than bar codes; they can be scanned from further away and they can in point of fact send data, not only store data.

There are three varieties of RFID tags: passive, active and hybrid. Passive RFID tags are the least expensive, because they are less complex. They need to be induced to disclose their data by taking power from an RFID reader. When the reader’s radio waves hit them, they reflect back their data. These tags have the same uses as the active tags, but are suitable for use where it is not vital to know where something is every minute of the day: for instance cows in a field or goats on a mountain.

Passive tags can be attached permanently by sewing them into hems or putting them under skin because they do not have their own electricity source and do not wear out. This is a cause of anxiety to some people who worry about an invasion of their privacy or the erosion of their human rights.

Active and hybrid tags are most frequently plainly visible so that the batteries can be changed as and when required. If this is going to be unlikely to take place, as in the case of wild animals, the tag can have a biodegradable clasp which will break sometime after the probable expiry of the battery.

Some uses for RFID tags are on season tickets so that the holder can pass through the style more quickly than a customer paying by cash. It has uses in security; most of the ID badges you see pinned to jackets have RFID built into them so that security guards do not have to stop and question everybody.

They can be put into wagons that repeatedly cross frontiers so that they do not have to stop for identification. They can be put on windscreens so that, as you pass through a motorway toll post, either your credit card is billed or the charge is added to your company’s monthly statement.

Hospitals utilize them on patients so that they do not lose anyone or misidentify them. RFID tags are helpful in our daily lives but people are concerned about criminals being able to read all this information too readily as well.

How Hybrid Cars Work

Basically, hybrid electric cars have two engines: a conventional petrol or diesel engine (the same as you would find in any modern car and an electric, battery powered engine, as you might find in a milk float or a forklift truck. The magical difference is that the car’s on board computer judges which engine is necessary to provide the power needed by the driver and switches it on.

Therefore, if you are accelerating to cruising speed for motorway driving; going up hill or overtaking, the car will probably use its liquid fuel engine but then as you ease off the accelerator to, say, cruise down the motorway; go down the other side of the hill or to drive in slow traffic, the computer will turn off the liquid fuel engine and turn on the electric engine.

The electric engine can be regarded as free to run, because it runs off batteries which are recharged by the car while it is using petrol or diesel and at some other times, such as whilst it is braking (and the alternators are recharging in both modes). You should never need to recharge your car’s batteries overnight as they do with forklift trucks.

There are in essence two types of hybrid cars: the semi hybrids and the full hybrids.

The semi hybrids have the same sort of set up: two engines, one running on liquid fuel and the other running on batteries, but the electric motor is not capable of running the car on its own. It is there to ‘assist’ the petrol or diesel engine.

In this type of hybrid, the electric motor is called an ‘assist’. These semi hybrids will save money on fuel, but when the car is moving, you are burning fuel all the time.

The main difference when it comes to the full hybrid is that both engines are capable of powering the car autonomously. Whilst you are running on electricity, you are running at zero expense to your wallet and at zero expense to the environment, unless you are actually pushing the car and then both engines might be working in union.

This changing of power sources is done automatically without any intrusion from the driver. In the case of the Prius, for instance, this remarkable achievement is accomplished by what Ford calls its Hybrid Synergy Drive. Other businesses have their equivalent to the HSD.

In order to get the most out of these full hybrids, you actually need to be doing an ‘average amount’ of driving under ‘average’ or ‘mixed’ circumstances. For instance, if you are driving in traffic, the car will try to use the electric engine, but if all you do is drive in inner city traffic jams the batteries will soon become depleted and you will be driving on liquid fuel all the time, which sort of negates the main reason for spending a great deal extra on a hybrid in the first instance.

The car needs to travel on open motorways in order to recharge its batteries so that it can use them when it gets back into town. If you only drive in town traffic, you might be better off getting a small run about instead.

Users can continue to pressure phone manufacturers and lawmakers to set limits on the use of GPS data. They can also trust that the government could move faster in order to catch up with the fast-changing technology. Meanwhile, the best that can be done for the moment is to protect one’s own privacy.

One way of doing this is by limiting data sharing, mainly when using GPS enabled phones and cameras. One should take time to know what happens to data that they upload to any website, especially social networking sites. Most sites always ask the user whether he or she wants to share the information before posting. This makes privacy the full responsibility of the user.
